INTERNSHIP POST VACANCY ANNOUCEMENT: Office of the Legal Counsel

 

The African Union established as a unique Pan African continental body is charged with spearheading Africa’s rapid integration and sustainable development by promoting unity, solidarity, cohesion and cooperation among the peoples of Africa and African States as well as developing a New Partnership worldwide.  Its Headquarters is located at Addis Ababa, capital city of Ethiopia.

 

AU recognizes that the Human Resource Capacity, particularly of young professionals needs to be harnessed and nurtured for the overall benefit of the people of the continent. AU has a lead role in this process by investing in the development of the youth.  AU has launched an Internship Programme that will help in expanding employment guarantee schemes and providing incentives for firms to hire young people.

 

Towards that end, the African Union Commission invites applicants who are citizens of Member States for the position within the of Legal Intern in the Office of the Legal Counsel.

Description:

 

Major Duties and responsibilities

 

The internship will provide the Legal Intern with the opportunity to develop legal skills while assisting the Office of the Legal Counsel. Responsibilities will include but not limited to:

 

·         Draft memos, conduct legal research and report writing,

 

·         Assist in organizing and convening meetings and conferences as well as preparation of materials for the meetings

 

·         Continuously monitor compliance with statutory obligations and advise accordingly

 

·         Draft and vet contracts, agreements, memorandum of understandings and other legal instruments

 

·         Prepare legal briefs and opinions on various topical issues affecting the Union

 

·         Assist in the drafting of legal texts in particular treaties, protocols, cooperation agreements and Rules of Procedure

 

·         Assist in the production of reports, plans, as well as reference documents on legal and procedural issues

 

·         Provide technical support to legal officers on ongoing issues/cases on the ICC and other international tribunals

 

·         Perform any other administrative duties

 

 

Education Qualifications and Experience Required

 

·         The applicant must have a Bachelor of Laws Degree (LL.B ), legal studies or any degree relating to law from a recognized university.

 

Other Requirements

 

1.    Language Requirement: Proficiency in one (1) of the African Union working languages (English, French, Arabic or Portuguese). Knowledge of any of the other three (3) languages will be an added advantage

 

2.    Age Requirement : N/A

 

3.    Duration: The duration of an internship must be for no more than three calendar months with a possibility of renewal only once subject to justification by the Office of the Legal counsel.

 

4.    Supporting Documents: Upon request successful graduate applicants are required to submit their copies of Degrees, Diplomas and Certificates. University students who have completed their studies but whose degrees have not been awarded are required to provide a testimonial letter from the University/College.

 

5.    Remuneration: The Commission will have no financial obligation towards the Legal Interns. The Legal Interns must therefore ensure that they have the means to sustain themselves during the period of the internship
